![]() ![]() I don't believe that was Sauron's intentions but it did what it did. Tolkien states that Dwarves did not tolerate well the domination of others and that is why instead of turning to Wraiths they instead became obsessed with acquiring great wealth which led to their ruin as this attracted the Dragons. Gollum had the One Ring for over 500 years but did not fade, he most certainly metamorphosed into a sort of New kind of being, no other like him is mentioned in Tolkien's writings, Why did he not fade? Was it because the rings affected each race differently? The Dwarves who received the rings were not affected the way Men were. Tolkien doesn't give an exact description of the time involved from the wearing of the ring until their passing into shadow but it was evidently a long process, could have been 100 years or 200 years but i have the feeling Sauron would not want to drag out there transformation too long. The nine rings given to Mortal Men prolonged their lives but living became intolerable and thusly each according to their own self will began to fade and become Ringwraiths. I was left pondering how the One Ring's effects on Gollum and Bilbo seemed to differ from the effects that the nine lesser rings produced also their effects on the Dwarfs.
